Boy Meets World

By: Lauren Miller

I'm sitting here calculating how many textbooks I could sell back on Amazon.com to be able to buy the entire "Boy Meets World" series on DVD.

I grew up with this show. Lately MTV2 and ABC Family have been showing old episodes of this beloved series, which has made me have to reflect a bit on why I loved this show so much, how terrible TV really is today, and what really matters in life.

It might sound stupid to say that I learned everything I need to know about life from a fictional TV show, but really it's true. By watching Cory, Topanga, Shawn, Eric and all the other characters grow from young children into adulthood I learned so much; so much more than is possible to learn from any TV show on the market today. I may not have known it at the time, but that show was monumental in my development as a person.

Mr.Feeney was my mentor.

Cory was a model for what my perfect boyfriend would look like.

Topanga was an example for what kind of woman I wanted to be.

Shawn showed me consequences for bad actions.

And Eric, well, showed me a little about taking life lightly.

The show always straddled the important lines of reality and tv reality, family friendly and teen friendly, comedy and drama. No other show could quite capture my heart and my like this show did.

By watching this show here in 2012 I've realized a few things about television today. I often recognize how terrible the shows that I'm watching are. I call most of my favorite current television shows guilty pleasures, but really what was missing was the guilt. Sure I feel lame for watching "Teen Mom," "Jersey Shore" and the rest of the reality tv show lineup the frequents my TV, but it wasn't until rewatching one of my favorite shows that I realized that there really is no real value in these shows as there was when I was watching "Boy Meets World."

Did you watch "Boy Meets World" when you were younger or was there another show out there that shaped you like this sitcom shaped me? Let me know in the comments below. Let's talk sitcoms loves!
